It all started in 1973 when 32 Tanzanian peasants from the Sukuma tribe in northeastern Tanzania, visited the Moesgaard Museum. They were invited by Associate Professor Skott and U-landsfonden af 1962 to demonstrate traditional dances and crafts. The visit made such an impression on some musicians and theater people from Jutland that they in 1977 went to Sukumaland. Several of the people, who are still active in Utamaduni Cultural Association, participated in this trip. The Danes were fascinated by the Sukuma way of drumming and dancing, and some of them went there again to learn more. From repeated visits to each other grew mutual understanding, friendship and respect. This is the Utamaduni Cultural Society’s human background. But there was also a more practical extrovert engagement. The Danes began namely under the name Utamadunigruppen (later Utamaduni Dance Troupe) to tour throughout Denmark with songs, dances, drumming, storytelling, crafts, cabin building, etc., and was a colorful feature at many contexts in schools, colleges and the like. The interest spread, dance groups arose, and all these people wanted to gather. They did so on a long weekend in 1983 – on the very first dance camp – with approximately 70 participants. It took place at Keramikgården in Ramten Forest, where the Utamaduni Camp has been ever since. The camp grew, and practical help was needed. A large crowd of local collectivists came with the help of the practical things at the camp. Thus it came about that the current Utamaduni Cultural Association occurred. The camp has grown from 70 to over 700 people, and each year we have had guest teachers from Sukumaland. In addition to the camps, the association in recent years engaged in assistance such as renovation and installation of corn mills in both Sukumaland and for the Masaai people in Ngorongoro area.

Since the first meeting with the Sukuma dance group WanaCecilia in 1973 a strong friendship with the group’s home Bujora Cultural Centre has emerged. The museum holds a museum, artisan school, clinic and much else, and many Danes have been guests there. The local dance groups has been a great inspiration, and cooperation with them has led new sukumadance- and music to Denmark.

The culturally interested Danes’ long-standing friendship with Sukuma people has brought many stories and experiences, and Utamaduni Archive has an aim to uncover these. In addition, the archive works for helping to document knowledge of the unique traditional culture of the Sukumas, which in modern and Western influences disappear with the older generations, and therefore are important to preserve.
